Wellcard records, scans, photos, production and geophysical logs

A Wellcard is the entry point to records for an individual wellbore. It quickly identifies the well and its location, then provides an overview of available information, which may include geology, samples, logs, production, analyses, construction, plugging and scans. Detailed views and browsing tools help members work with complex data sets.

The Overview card helps confirm well identity

  1. Confirm the identity and map. Check licence, name, operator, current status, location, total depth and date. Copy the coordinates or open the surface location on the Well Map.
  2. Check what exists for this well. The availability tiles show which sections have records and their access level. Counts indicate the extent of indexed records for the well.
  3. Choose an arrangement and jump. Optimized arrangements for Geology, Engineering, Municipal and Records put the same data into a different order for different kinds of work. Every card remains available; jump directly to a section or search within the current Wellcard.
  4. Keep useful wells. Members can pin the well or add it to a PxTools Workbench project to organize wells into lists and collect private notes and tags. From a curated list, use the Workbench tools and exports to investigate questions about those wells.

Core photos and chip microscope photos

The Library provides tens of thousands of public core and chip images. Core-photo coverage represents more than 500 wells; chip-photo coverage represents more than 100 wells. Find them from Advanced Search, the public photo map layers, or the Core and Samples card on a Wellcard.

Core-photo viewer

Core held at the OGSR Library is photographed box by box under dry, wet and ultraviolet fluorescence. Medium-quality images are made available on the Library website immediately after photography. The Library strives to photograph the full available core length for a well; unphotographed core can be requested for photography at the rates in the fee schedule.

Move by box or depth; switch among dry, wet or ultraviolet images where present; blend or brush one image type over another; pan, zoom, rotate and use full screen. Image controls include brightness, contrast, exposure and saturation. Calibrate the scale to measure in centimetres, millimetres or inches, then download the composed view.

Member enhancement: formation picks and oil, gas and water intervals can be overlaid by depth behind the public imagery.

The Core Photo viewer provides access to thousands of core boxes, indexed by depth and fluid; members also see formation and fluid context. Main-stage tools support lab-like review, including virtual wetting and ultraviolet lighting.

Chip-photo viewer

Chip photography uses a camera connected to a microscope, with several photos at different magnifications taken for each sample vial. Full-quality images are available here. The Library strives to photograph the full available chip interval for each well; wells with chips that have not been photographed can be requested under the fee schedule.

Filter by magnification, view, parsed state and depth-label style. Step by depth or photo, choose micro, medium or maximum images, and use keyboard navigation or full screen. Adjust brightness, contrast and saturation; invert or use monochrome; measure a calibrated line; sample colours and highlight a colour range; then download the image.

Understand geophysical-log availability

An Advanced Search for Geophysical Logs: Yes finds wells with a log reported by an operator on the drilling and completion report. On the Wellcard, check the three counts separately:

Scanned logs

Every log available in the OGSR Library well files is scanned and viewable here. As new logs are received, they are scanned and made available before entering the hard-copy well files. Visitors receive a short tile preview; Annual Access includes limited full-log viewing, and the Unlimited Log Viewing option removes that online cap.

LAS files

LAS files are digital curve files. They are sold per curve according to the fee schedule; contact the Library when you need a particular curve set.

Reported logs

Operator-reported logs listed on the drilling and completion report. Detailed rows are member content, and a reported log may exist without an online scan.

Preview records, then open the scan viewer

The Scans card previews the scanned-document and digital-download inventory for a well. Use it to confirm that the file contains the kind of record you need; then open the dedicated scan viewer to read the pages, move through the document set and inspect a page at a useful working size.

All records held in the Library's physical well files are scanned. New records are scanned daily and automatically updated on the website in under 24 hours of scanning.

Read the chart, then inspect the numbers

The Production card charts the fluid production recorded for a well: oil, natural gas, condensate, and water or brine. Gray bars show days on production, while pink circles mark pressure readings. Hover over a chart mark to read its value.

Below the chart, the Production section provides the detailed numeric tables. Members can export those tables as CSV files and follow links to the original submitted forms that contain the data.

Use a Wellcard for detail; use a project to extend the view

A Wellcard gathers detailed geology, engineering, production and related records for one well. It is the place to understand the information at a single location before comparing it with other wells.

One well: detailed records and Strat

For one well, members can switch the Geology card from List to Strat. Strat places that well's available picks into the complete stratigraphic framework, which helps expose absent or unreported intervals.

Regional work: PxTools Workbench

Use a PxTools Workbench project to collect wells, private tags and notes, then work regionally with maps, tables, aggregate statistics and exports for your own software. A selected set can also become a regional geological view: XSEC · 2D draw creates a stick/correlation diagram from up to 10 selected wells, while FENCE · 3D draw creates an interactive 3D view. Use the record as a route to the Library

Wellcards, map layers and the PxTools KMZ are discovery and delivery tools. All well-file documents and geophysical logs received by the Library are scanned for online access, and newly received cores are photographed as received. The main catalog not available online is deeply historical documentation that is not part of a well file. Anything not online can be requested remotely from the Library or consulted in person.
